Transitory Skin: Temporal Layering of the American Home

International Proceedings

Author(s): Elias Kotzambasis, Miguel Guitart & Christopher Romano

Transitory Skin is a participatory build exploration that approaches architecture as the accumulation of temporal layers in skin building under a continuous process that is inherently incomplete and imperfect. The processes of accu卢mulation of skin layers present in our buildings are generally concealed and overlooked, suppressing a collective material history. Within the condition of material change, the North American balloon and platform frame home cannot be understood as a complete object after its construction, but as a process by which adding and removing building mate-rials takes place continuously. Transitory Skin speculated on the way architecture engages with material circularity by examining how skin building takes place under a continuous process acted on by a series of participants throughout time, interpreting material recirculation, tectonic continuity, and agent participation.
